Challenge

Visually impaired individuals face everyday struggles with tasks that most people take for granted, such as identifying clothing colors and understanding garment care instructions. With approximately 30 million Europeans living with visual impairments, these issues create barriers to independence, dignity, and sustainability. Additionally, the textile industry has yet to adapt to meet these inclusive needs, leaving a significant portion of the population underserved.

"The 'Talkie-Beanie' is much more than a trendy gadget. It’s a statement - a reminder that even the simplest daily tasks, like choosing clothes and sorting laundry, can be real challenges for visually impaired individuals," explains Nancy Delhalle, COO of Serviceplan Group. "Moreover, with this project, our agency aims to meet the European Union’s 2030 sustainability goals for a more sustainable textile industry. When we consider that 30 million Europeans suffer from visual impairments*, a number that is increasing due to the aging population, we realize that this project addresses many of society’s challenges. This is why Serviceplan has also initiated discussions with key players in the textile sector to accelerate the adoption of a new standard for garment care."

Solution

The ‘Talkie Beanie’ campaign, launched pro bono by Serviceplan in partnership with Ligue Braille/Brailleliga and BShirt Rocks, introduces a revolutionary approach to inclusive textiles. The Talkie Beanie features a QR code inside, allowing visually impaired users to access garment details like color and washing instructions through speech synthesis technology on their smartphones. Beyond addressing daily challenges, the campaign advocates for industry-wide adoption of inclusive standards in garment care, aligning with the European Union’s 2030 sustainability goals.
