When Marthe’s work manages to slightly itch the viewer’s brain, this is what gets her thrilled. Born in France to Dutch parents, she embarked on her artistic journey and graduated in 2021 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in the Netherlands. These two countries and cultures have influenced her artistic style in distinct ways: the French classical and romantic perspective on materials and forms, and the Dutch innovative, rule-breaking side.
Drawing inspiration from science and nature, she translates these influences into her own abstract and captivating artistic language, always maintaining an intuitive and playful approach. Challenging herself, Marthe creates both large-scale kinetic sculptures and explores a design-based approach with pieces that blur the line between sculptures and furniture.
She strives for her sculptures to follow their own path in the creative process and become shaped like creatures. In her work, Marthe enjoys rethinking the materials (such as clay, fired, or air-dried) she uses, to challenge their physical properties and meaning, constantly pushing the boundaries of the mediums used.
You can find her works at fairs such as This Art Fair and REA Milan, or also in group exhibitions for example at The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. An important aspect for Marthe is the perception of the audience and how visitors experience and behave with the works, striving to spark curiosity.
