* Note on calculation: The CO2 figures were calculated, not measured. All CO2 figures marked with * are modeled values from a comparison between a hypothetical continuous standard delivery and delivery optimized with NE.R.O. CarbonCut (delivery increased, reduced, or paused depending on the electricity mix). Only the electricity consumption of the delivered impressions at the respective time of delivery is included, assessed using the CO2 intensity of the current electricity mix. Emissions from hardware manufacturing and from producing the spot are not included. Electricity mix and CO2 intensity (in grams of CO2 equivalent per kWh) come from the data provider Electricity Maps; the calculation is carried out by technology partner Cynapsis. Both figures (51 percent and 8.2 t) refer to the impressions delivered during the campaign period (March 2 to May 18, 2026). They describe calculated, not measured, emission reductions.

Overview
Together with Mediaplus, Dr. Hauschka aligned its digital media delivery with the electricity mix for the first time. Using NE.R.O. Smart Data CarbonCut, Mediaplus automatically shifted delivery of the in-stream video campaign to time windows with a high share of renewable energy in the power grid.
Outcome: a calculated CO2 reduction of 51 percent* per impression and around 8.2 t* less CO2 than with standard delivery, with a VTR of 90 percent and 13.5 million completed views.
Challenge
How much responsibility fits into a video campaign?
Since its founding in 1967, Dr. Hauschka has stood for natural cosmetics with a clear stance.
Traditional media planning has so far rarely considered environmental criteria. A campaign’s delivery and its environmental impact are usually viewed separately.
The task for Mediaplus: to make delivery of the video campaign CO2-optimized* without changing reach, visibility, or campaign performance, and to integrate the solution seamlessly into ongoing campaign management.
How can this work in practice without putting performance at risk?
Solution
The electricity mix sets the pace for delivery
The idea: The campaign was not delivered continuously, but specifically when a particularly high share of renewable energy was flowing through the power grid.
- Current grid data as the basis: NE.R.O. Smart Data CarbonCut analyzes the current electricity mix in near real time and identifies phases with a high share of renewable energy.
- Automated management: Delivery switches on automatically during these phases, with no manual intervention in day-to-day operations.
- Delivery secured: Despite pauses during unfavorable grid conditions, the planned volume was reached, partly through planning with a slightly extended runtime.
Outcome: Delivery ran automatically and CO2-optimized*, while the campaign continued to be optimized according to standard performance criteria.

“Dr. Hauschka has been developing natural cosmetics since 1967. For our media strategy, we deliberately chose a new approach: by delivering our campaign via NE.R.O. CarbonCut based on renewable energy, we are putting our commitment into practice here as well.”

FAQs
NE.R.O. Smart Data CarbonCut analyzes the electricity mix in the respective delivery area in near real time, based on data from the provider Electricity Maps. Management works via a dynamic threshold that takes into account historical electricity mix data as well as season, time of day, and weather: when the share of renewable energy is high, delivery is increased; when the electricity mix is unfavorable, delivery is reduced or paused. This keeps the planned campaign volume largely intact. For Dr. Hauschka’s in-stream video campaign, the calculation showed 51 percent* less CO2 per impression than with standard delivery, with a VTR of 90 percent in Germany (benchmark: 85 percent**). Mediaplus uses electricity mix data as an additional management parameter alongside standard criteria such as target audience, time of day, and environment.
A traditional campaign runs on a fixed schedule, regardless of how high the share of renewable energy in the power grid is at any given moment. Electricity-mix-based delivery adds a continuously updated management variable to this schedule: the current electricity mix. This makes it possible to reduce the calculated CO2 emissions of delivery. Budget and frequency usually remain unchanged, and the planned delivery volume can be maintained, with a slightly extended runtime if needed.
In the Sustainability Initiative, Mediaplus brings together its projects on environmental criteria in media planning, including data-minimizing targeting and the ESG assessment of media partners.
The goal is to integrate environmental criteria into media management in a verifiable way rather than relying on general claims. Mediaplus assesses individually how this can be applied to each media strategy, depending on its objectives. Learn more about the initiative’s projects on the Mediaplus Sustainability Initiative page.
